SINGAPORE: Foreign media covering the 20th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Singapore have given the event's organising committee a "thumbs up".

Many were impressed by the meticulous preparation put into planning the event and they have described their experience so far as "organised" and "efficient" – traits that they have come to associate with events held in Singapore.

Visiting journalists were also pleasantly surprised by the warm reception they received from the moment they arrived in Singapore.

Sondang Sirait, a presenter for Indonesian broadcaster SCTV, said: "Just when I walked out of the plane yesterday, there were people greeting, people with APEC signs greeting, and I had questions for them which they helped me with, such as getting a shuttle to the hotel, and there were people lining up at the assistance desk and they were very helpful too."

1,700 volunteers were roped in to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Their duties include receiving delegates at the airport and tending to the information booths at various hotels.

Attending the second day of APEC, Ms Sirait said she has no problems with the security measures put in place.

"Security doesn't give out or provide too much hassle as they do in other countries. I mean, I've been to events like this in Indonesia, in the US and some other countries and I think you guys handle it smoothly," she added.

Other areas that have impressed the visiting media include the prompt logistical support.

Theresa Reyes, a journalist from the Manila bureau of business newspaper Nikkei, found it easy arranging for transport, accommodation and getting accreditation.

"Everything was done through email, so even from Manila, I was already getting information about my accreditation and that things are being taken care of. So it's been very smooth so far. It's hardly started, but so far I've seen no kinks," Ms Reyes said.

The APEC Summit ends on Sunday, November 15.
