SINGAPORE: Republic Polytechnic took the tango out of the ballroom and into the world of ethnic dancing at its month-long "Reflections Festival."

Traditional Asian dances got a tango twist in performances choreographed by dance professionals from Singapore, India and France.

The dancers were from the National University of Singapore, Republic Polytechnic and YuYing Secondary School Alumni Dance Group.

Dancing alongside them were Ananth Nagaraj and Tanvi Bhaskar from India and popular performers in the cultural dance sector.

Ananth was a gold medalist in 'bharatha natyam' and does a lot of performances in India. Tanvi has carried out performances both in India and Singapore.

The Tango Project is supported by the Singapore French Embassy.

In September, Tango, whose roots are traced back to the suburbs of Buenos Aires, was declared part of world's cultural heritage by the United Nations. - CNA/vm
