SINGAPORE: The corporate social responsibility (CSR) project "We Are One" received its largest donation so far on Wednesday - S$150,000 from the MES Group of Companies.

The joint project by MediaCorp, CapitaLand and LEGO Singapore is to help those adversely affected by the downturn.

A group of primary school students want to help Singaporeans tide over the economic downturn.

And they were at ION Orchard to contribute to the "We Are One" project where every S$2 donated gives them a LEGO brick, which they can add to the 5 by 8-metre replica of Singapore island.

One student said: "This project is very meaningful, as everybody, even though we are kids, we can help by putting bricks."

Another student said: "I feel grateful that we have this project to help the people that are so poor, and not as fortunate as us."

The project which aims to raise S$1 million, also got a boost of S$150,000 from a philanthropist who believes in giving back to society, something he has been doing for the past 20 years.

Beneficiaries of "We Are One" include the Community Chest and President's Challenge 2009, as well as Singaporeans and families affected by the economic downturn.

S M A Jaleel, managing director, MES Group of Companies, said: "It is our national call. And with the progress of Singapore, I have progressed myself. And therefore I don't mind sharing some savings with the unfortunate ones during the downturn.

Basically, I believe that the more I give, I’d be blessed with more. And I have been saying that, and I have been getting more. Therefore I would like to give more at what I can afford.

The "We Are One" project was launched by President S R Nathan and the final brickwork will be unveiled later this month. - CNA/vm
