SINGAPORE : The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) hopes to introduce the sport to more kindergarten and even lower primary students.
This follows the success of the PAP Community Foundation (PCF) Table Tennis programme which has grown to 46 centres in 12 constituencies in less than a year.
A carnival was held at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall to showcase the skills of the 5- to 6-year-olds on the programme.
Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong also presented certificates to participating centres.
The target is to get 10 more constituencies to be part of the scheme next year.
About 1,000 boys and girls are on the programme. The PCF table tennis programme started in February this year at the Nee Soon South PCF Kindergarten.
"A lot of the players pick up the game in Primary Four... We hope students (can) pick up table tennis in kindergarten, so when they go to primary school, they can continue and further nurture their talent," said Lee Bee Wah, president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association. - CNA /ls
