SINGAPORE: Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will co-chair a high-level Singapore-Russian commission that will explore broad-based cooperation with Russia.

The other co-chair of the inter-governmental commission is Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Sobyanin.

The announcement comes as Singapore and Russia stress the need to maintain high-level dialogue between their political leaders.

Senior Minister Goh met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the Istana on Monday.

In a statement, the leaders said they hoped the new commission will lead to an increase in trade and investment.

President Medvedev, who is on a state visit to Singapore, also met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In talks that were described as "warm and friendly", both leaders agreed that the new inter-governmental commission will give growing bilateral ties an added boost.
