SINGAPORE: The Boys' Brigade received an unusual wish for its "Sharity Gift Box" charity project this year.

Madam Ang Suan Cheok asked for the badly-working lights in her old flat to be fixed. The 79-year-old, who stays with her two mentally-ill adult children, often has to move around in the dark because she cannot afford repairs.

The Sharity Gift Box has arranged for the light fittings to be retrofitted, so that she will have a safe and brighter home by this year's end.

This was made possible by sponsorship from Prudential Singapore.

The annual charity drive is in its 22nd year. It will reach out to 28,982 people this year - some 900 more than 2008.

New beneficiaries include about 2,000 groups from the ComCare Transition Scheme, which helps those facing difficulties finding work, especially during the economic downturn.

The charity project will be officially launched on November 28.
