SINGAPORE: The wife of opposition politician Tan Lead Shake has been sentenced to a total of 16 years in jail.
The sentence was meted out to China national Wu Yun Yun, for attacking her in-laws, killing one of them.
26-year-old China national, Wu Yun Yun was sentenced to 12 years jail for fatally stabbing her brother-in-law, 33-year-old Tan Lead Sane.
Wu was also sentenced to another four years' jail for slashing his wife, 36-year-old Huang Mei Zhe.
The incident took place in the couple's shared home on Paya Lebar Crescent on 28 June 2008.
Wu, a Singapore permanent resident, was originally charged with murder which is a capital offence.
But she pleaded guilty to culpable homicide in April 2009 for killing Lead Sane and attempted culpable homicide for injuring Madam Huang.
A culpable homicide charge still carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Subhas Anandan, Wu Yun Yun's lawyer, said: "You can consider giving life sentence if you think there is a possibility that she will come out and commit the same type of offence again. Here the psychiatrist evidence is quite clear that there is no need to have such fear."
Earlier this year, the court had heard that Wu suffered from major depression and the symptoms included suicidal tendencies and a sense of hopelessness.
But the dead man's wife and mother said they plan to appeal and have fresh evidence submitted in court.
