SINGAPORE: "Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Awards" were given out on Tuesday to two people who made significant contributions to the social services.

The inaugural awards were given to recognise top volunteers of the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

Mrs Ann Wee, who is in her eighties, was honoured with the award for her work with delinquent youths.

The second recipient of the award - Madam Indranee Nadisen - spent over 30 years caring for more than 40 children, before persistent shoulder and knee problems forced her to retire as a foster mom.

The 69-year-old said she was inspired by her own adoptive mother's example as a loving foster parent.

Besides the two volunteers, some 80 other volunteers were also recognised in a ceremony held at the National Museum of Singapore on Tuesday evening.

Notable public figures like former national swimmer Ang Peng Siong and Nominated Member of Parliament Dr Paulin Straughan were given the "Friend of MCYS" award for help rendered to the ministry.

In addition, volunteers were presented with sculptures symbolising the spirit of volunteerism, designed by local artist Chua Boon Kee.
