SINGAPORE: Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has urged board members of Singapore's charity groups to be more responsible and provide better leadership.
He said although most are volunteers and may not have the right training, it is still important to have good leadership.
Mr Goh said: "You have to exercise your responsibilities as board members of charities. Of course, it's patchy across the board. Some are better than the others but speaking generally for the social sector side, I think the board leadership can be upgraded."
He also urged those in the social services sector to temper their idealism with pragmatism.
Mr Goh was speaking at the close of the Social Leadership Singapore Programme on Friday.
Organised by the National Volunteer and Philantrophy Centre, the eight-month course addresses challenges and leadership breakthroughs needed to improve social conditions in Singapore.
40 individuals representing major sectors of social services participated in the programme.
