SINGAPORE: It was a heartfelt moment as the late Anthony Yeo was honoured with the Special Recognition Award.
Known to many as the "father of counselling" he was recognised for his pioneering efforts in counselling and his training of more than 1,000 counsellors.
The family wanted a low profile and so a former student of Mr Yeo spoke on their behalf.
Christine Wong, executive director, Samaritans of Singapore, said: "Anthony has always not accepted any nomination because he felt that the work that we are doing is for the client, for those who need the service, and not because we are expecting any reward.
"He has always brushed off any nomination and all that as he felt we shouldn't be paid for or be famous for what we are doing."
The Lions Befrienders Service Association was honoured for excellence in volunteer management.
Its chairman said the award is a testament to the efforts of volunteers who have stayed with the association all these years.
David Lee, chairman, Lions Befrienders Service Association, said: "Winning this award is very important for us, especially for the volunteers, for the Befrienders. It's a reward for them, all your efforts come to this."
Two Corporate Citizen Awards were also presented.
They went to CapitaLand for its efforts in supporting underprivileged children and Standard Chartered Bank for encouraging volunteerism among its staff. - CNA/vm
