SINGAPORE: More hotels are recognising their staff for going the extra mile for their guests.
A record 2,204 hotel staff won the Excellent Service Award this year, the highest number in the 15 years that the award has been given out.
With the record, it is no wonder the service ambassadors were all smiles when they received their awards on Monday.
Ms Chng Poh Kee, a 50-year-old assistant housekeeper at the Allson Hotel, was one of them.
She had spent two days helping a guest retrieve her misplaced belongings. The guest had left a shopping bag of new purchases at the food centre next to the hotel.
Ms Chng personally went to the food centre and checked with stallholders, but to no avail. She went back to the food centre the next day and finally found the missing shopping bag. She then arranged for it to be posted to the guest.
Ms Chng said: "I put myself in the guest's shoes to understand how they would feel. So I think that for this one, no doubt it's not a very valuable item, but it's very sentimental to her. So I really want to try... (to) find the thing and return it to them."
Commenting on the record number of award recipients, Margaret Heng, executive director of Singapore Hotel Association, said: "It really shows that a lot of the employers are placing a lot more emphasis on service levels, and they also realise that it's also important to give due recognition, especially at the national level, where everyone comes together."
A World Economic Forum report on international service orientation showed that Singapore has risen 16 ranks since 2006 to be placed 10th in the world.
