SINGAPORE : Muslims around the world celebrate Hari Raya Haji on Friday, and the sheep for this years' Korban ritual have arrived in Singapore for the annual sacrificial rites.
1,835 sheep were flown in on Tuesday morning from Australia.
Brought in by approved vendor Mini Environment Services, the sheep will be slaughtered on the day of Aidil Adha or Hari Raya Haji. The meat will be distributed to the poor and needy.
Excess capacity in air freight during the downturn has made it cheaper to bring in the sheep by air than by sea.
Two more deliveries are expected over the next few days.
A total of 6,000 sheep and goats will be sacrificed at mosques islandwide on Friday as an act of thanksgiving. - CNA /ls
