SINGAPORE : 15,000 households have been targeted for an islandwide survey on mental health. The door-to-door survey will be conducted by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
It is spending S$6.9 million to understand the prevalence of mental illnesses among Singaporeans.
The Singapore Mental Health Study aims to create a database with a wealth of information for the formulation of policies.
Information from respondents will be kept confidential.
Last year, the IMH saw 33,000 mental patients, an almost 14 per cent increase since four years ago.
Schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders are the three most common mental illnesses in Singapore.
Dr Mythily Subramaniam, assistant director of the Research Division at IMH, said: "This is the first in-depth survey which will establish the prevalence of mental illnesses in Singapore.
"At the same time, it will also establish whether people are getting the right treatment for these mental illnesses, and whether they are seeking treatment for it." - CNA /ls
