SINGAPORE: 27 chief executive officers from the marine sector gathered on Wednesday to make a commitment to workplace safety.

They included major industry players like Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Offshore and Marine.

Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong witnessed a pledge signing, where the chief executives committed to strive for zero workplace injury.

He also announced the release of a draft safety plan for the marine sector which laid out specific focuses for the industry.

One of the goals in the plan is to halve the number of workplace deaths by 2013.

In addition, a safety conference for the region's chief executives across various sectors will be held next year.

The inaugural conference hopes to draw 600 people and aims to come up with safety solutions tailored for Asia. - CNA/vm
