SINGAPORE: Police have reminded the public to be alert to kidnap scams after it managed to foil one on Monday.

A 55-year-old housewife had received a call from an unknown caller with a heavy Chinese accent claiming her son had been kidnapped. The man demanded a ransom of S$30,000.

The woman believed the caller, as she heard cries in the background and presumed it was her son, who was vacationing overseas.

She then proceeded to withdraw the money from an OCBC Bank at People's Park Centre but her nervousness aroused the teller who alerted the police.

The woman then went to a nearby remittance centre to send the money to an account in China. The staff at the centre also noted her nervousness and contacted the authorities.

The police arrived soon after and helped to contact her son, who was safe.

The money was returned to the woman. - CNA/vm
