SINGAPORE: When it comes to training, the men in blue are now getting a dose of reality television - only it is more real and stressful.
Police officer training has taken on a new dimension as trainees will now have to undergo and pass a new scenario-based practical test in a simulated setting.
At the Home Team Academy at Old Choa Chu Kang Road, various cameras positioned around the purpose-built compound will capture every detail of their reaction.
Although there have been similar training facilities, the authorities say the realism factor has been beefed up, and trainers have the ability to create unexpected scenarios.
"This will help to assess the trainee's ability to respond to a particular situation in an appropriate and calibrated manner," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Loy Chye Meng.
Since June 16, retired officers have also been employed to facilitate training by imparting soft skills to the new trainees.
These would include "the soft approach" said one such officer, retired police officer Albert Loo. "How to relate to people ... not to use hard tactics or harsh language."
Officers are also taught how to help those in need.
Another retired police officer Izzudin Omar said: "As officers on the ground we must have knowledge." For example, officers should be able to refer those with financial problems to places such as the Family Service Centre where help can be given.
The first batch of 30 officers is currently undergoing training at the facility.
