SINGAPORE: Mercy Relief has received an overwhelming response in sheep orders for this year's Korban ritual.
The organisation got more than 700 orders for the annual sacrificial rite - almost double the number last year.
The organisation had targeted 400 sheep for the Korban programme this year.
Meat from the sacrifice is distributed to the poor and needy.
Mercy Relief says the overwhelming response is due to Singaporeans helping those in need as well as the optimistic economic outlook, which has encouraged more contributions.
Jaffar Mydin, Mercy Relief's head of international programme, said: "For this year, we have a total of 710 orders for our Korban programme. This is a marked increase over the previous year when we did 370 goats for Korban in the three countries of Indonesia, Myanmar and Yemen. It's a very heartening figure indeed for this year, which is more than double from last year."
As part of its "Food Aid Relief Programme", Mercy Relief will also conduct the Korban overseas. This year's main focus will be for the earthquake victims in Padang, Indonesia.
Mercy Relief will also conduct the Korban ritual at Pangalengan and Palembang.
