SINGAPORE : A new Singapore record was set on Sunday for the largest number of people passing wishing spheres in formation.

The letters "CP" were formed by 1,100 residents, with "CP" standing for Chong Pang constituency in Yishun.

And for nearly 10 minutes, the residents passed along 20 wishing spheres which are white balls with New Year wishes written on them.

Separately in Pasir Ris, residents put their best foot forward to raise awareness of the upcoming Youth Olympic Games.

Five hundred people took part in the North East Challenge walk. The aim was to walk 2,010 metres within 2,010 seconds, or 33.5 minutes.

It was flagged off by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean.

Mr Teo, who is also an MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, also launched a five-year environment plan for the North East District.

He said: "There are many ways...where our residents can contribute to maintaining the environment, including keeping the area clean and green, and there is also a very interesting recycling exchange initiative where residents who bring forward their recyclable materials can exchange them for food items." - CNA/ms
