SINGAPORE : The average monthly household expenditure in Singapore for the 2007-2008 period increased by 2.7 per cent per annum compared to the 2002-2003 period.
This was revealed by the Department of Statistics in its latest survey of household expenditure.
In dollar terms, this amounted to S$3,760, up from S$3,290.
At the same time, the survey also showed that the average monthly household income from all sources grew by 6.1 per cent per annum from S$5,540 to S$7,440 over the same period.
The survey showed that in 2007/2008, housing and related expenditure - which includes food and transport - accounted for the largest share of the monthly household expenditure at over 60 per cent.
Transport expenses went up from S$620 to S$700, mainly due to higher spending on private road transport, particularly expenditure on petrol stemming from oil price hikes.
Spending on healthcare grew by 5.8 per cent per annum from S$170 to S$230. This came on the back of increases in expenses on hospitalisation, specialised medical treatment, dental services and pharmaceutical products.
With higher spending on school fees, private tuition and other educational courses, the average monthly expenditure on educational services also rose from S$200 to S$230. But spending on recreation and culture dropped from S$450 to S$380.
The Statistics Department said there was also a decline in the average expenditure on overseas holiday trips. A possible reason for this was the competitive airfares brought about by the growing popularity of budget airlines.
The survey also showed that while average monthly spending on desktop and laptop computers declined, spending on Pay-TV subscriptions went up. - CNA/ms
