SINGAPORE: The new Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) held a fair in the heartlands on Thursday to recruit staff.

The new S$800 million healthcare institution, which will open in March next year, is looking for housekeepers, healthcare assistants, assistant technicians and patient service associates to fill its more than 300 job vacancies.

Liak Teng Lit, CEO of Alexandra Health, said: "The kind of people suitable for a hospital is a very select group. First, you must have the heart – you must care about another human being.

"But because the hospital is a specialised place where you have to know your job, there is no such thing as a low-skilled job. You need the brains too. We need to sieve it down to a very narrow group."

To achieve this, the e2i is helping to screen candidates. It is the first time that the institute is working with a hospital in a staffing exercise.

Ong Ye Kung, chairman of e2i, said: "For this hospital, the requirements are special. In the area of cleaning, for example, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital has decided that instead of outsourcing, they are going to in-source it.

"Their logic is very compelling. If cleanliness and hygiene in a hospital are of such importance, it should be a core competence and we should do it well. So the requirement for a cleaner here is very high. We will help them train these people."

In all, the hospital will be staffed by some 2,500 people, including those coming over from the current Alexandra Hospital. When fully operational, the new Khoo Teck Puat Hospital will be able to cater to some 600,000 residents in Singapore.

The hospital will be opened in two phases. The first phase will be on March 28 next year when the specialist clinics start operation. By September next year, the Acute and Emergency Care Department and the in-patient wards will also go into operation.
