SINGAPORE: Some 300 needy students from various racial backgrounds will receive bursaries totalling S$35,000.
This is the second year that the Sree Ramar Temple at Changi Point is giving out the money, which makes up 25 per cent of its annual surplus.
Needy students whose family income is below S$1,500 a month will qualify for the bursary. The temple works with 19 other organisations, such as the community development councils and grassroots bodies to identify students in need.
Mr V M Karmegam, the temple's vice president, said the aim is for the temple to reach out to the community at large.
Mr Karmegam said: "We feel the temple is not just a place for worship but a place for the community to come together and share each others well being.
"As such we feel that the temple should play its role and reach out to not only the Hindu community but also to others who deserve help as well."
Mr Karmegam said 40 per cent of the students receiving the bursary are non-Indians.
