VIENTIANE: Singapore moved another step closer to a staggering 23rd successive SEA Games gold medal in men's waterpolo on Sunday with an 8-1 win over the Philippines.
The men opened their campaign in the four-team competition with a 14-5 triumph over Indonesia on Saturday and if they beat Thailand on Monday (3.30pm, Singapore time), they will win the first gold medal of the 25th SEA Games in Vientiane.
Vice-captain Terrence Tan insisted on Sunday no one in the team was overconfident. "Everyone takes it as a given that we will win gold, but the Philippines, our bitter rivals, really made us work today," he told MediaCorp, after the match.
"They had a few shots that came off the post and our goalkeeper (Nigel Tay) did well to keep us ahead in the game. Once we were ahead we worked hard to keep the game safe."
Kenneth Wee and Alvin Lee scored two goals each for the Republic, with Eugene Teo, Lin Di Yan, Luo Nan and Yip Ren Kai adding one a piece as the Philippines proved no match for the champions.
Tan, 29, will retire after these Games.
With five golds already, the new father intends to focus on his family, especially two-week-old daughter Shannon.
Looking ahead to the clash with the Thais, he said: "If we do win gold, I'll dedicate it to my daughter." - TODAY
