SINGAPORE : The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will step up on fire safety checks this festive season to make sure that building owners do not flout safety rules.
In the first half of the year, it served 1,700 fire hazard warnings, an 80 per cent jump compared to the same period a year ago.
Recent fires at night spots in Russia and Indonesia have once again thrown the spotlight on fire safety in these places.
At St James Power Station, which houses 10 entertainment outlets under one roof, 20 per cent of its staff are trained in fire safety.
There is also a fire command centre within the club. Its fire safety committee also regularly reviews its emergency measures.
"St James (completed) a fire drill about two weeks ago... It's always good to do these fire drills to remind us what to do during an emergency situation when a fire breaks out," said Andrew Tan, executive director of St James Holdings. - CNA /ls
