SINGAPORE: It's official. Singapore will not be hosting the 2013 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. And it is unlikely Singapore will host the 2015 Games either.

This was revealed to reporters on Tuesday by Singapore National Olympic Council secretary-general Chris Chan.

The decision, which was expected by many in the sports sector, followed numerous delays to a world-class sports facility which Singapore has been planning to build.

The S$1.87b Sports Hub was supposed to be ready by next year initially, but it is now expected to be completed only in 2013.

Singapore has on two previous occasions turned down its chance to host the SEA Games because of the Sports Hub.

Singapore hosted the SEA Games in 1973, 1983 and 1993, and were to host it again in 2007 but had declined to do so because the Sports Hub was originally slated to begin construction around that time.

The building of the Sports Hub has been repeatedly delayed as the global financial crisis caused construction costs to rise.
