SINGAPORE: The Singapore Budget was the most researched term here in 2009, according to Yahoo - with former Miss Singapore Ris Low and AWARE following not far behind.
Yahoo and Google recently unveiled their top local search lists - including for celebrities, food and major local events - and for both search engines, the term "swine flu" figured prominently.
According to Yahoo's 2009 Year in Review, this year's Budget tops the list of its search terms, followed by SGX; Ris Low; Manohara Odelia Pinot; AWARE; F1 Singapore; and The Little Nyonya local drama series.
Local talents also dominated Yahoo celebrity search rankings. Top searches included Xiaxue (where rumours of her death were greatly exaggerated); Felicia Chin (allegations of plastic surgery) and Fiona Xie (reports that she had quit MediaCorp under mysterious circumstances).
Singaporeans didn't stop searching even when they were on the go. The top five most searched words on mobile in the past 12 months were movies; H1N1/swine flu; Michael Jackson; DJI and soccer.
Under the fastest-rising search category, facebook login; swine flu; and Susan Boyle were the top three search terms, according to Google's annual Zeitgeist for Singapore.
"Looking at the fastest-rising search terms, you can see that people in Singapore were interested in spending time online (Facebook, Twitter, Dragonica), and keen on the latest developments of music sensations (Susan Boyle, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga), in addition to their perennial fixations on health (swine flu), home (property guru) and travel (Tiger Airways bookings)," the Google survey noted.
