SINGAPORE: Six months after their auditions, it was Singapore Idol hopefuls Sylvia Ratonel and Sezairi Sezali who garnered the most votes, edging out Tabitha Nauser to go into the finals of the competition on December 27.
Sezairi, who will start his National Service in January next year, said the result was a little unexpected. "I honestly thought it was going to be an all-girl finale," said the 22-year-old. "But I'm thankful to all those who voted for me."
Ratonel, 21, said: "I'm very excited to have come this far, out of the 4,000 people who first auditioned. I was really floored. I'm trying not to get too wowed by it."
Both finalists say they are going to give it their all for the finals. For Sezairi, his experience playing in a band will be his ace. "There's going to be a live band there, and that's when I'm in my element," he said.
"I feel like we're both equals," said Ratonel. "I really want this as much as the next person. I am definitely going to bring my 'A' game and show Singapore I can do this."
Her trump card? "Maybe it's that I can groove better," she joked. And as for the whole "possibly Singapore's first female Idol" hooha, both say the gender issue is "a bit old".
"Vote for talent," said Ratonel. "The person you feel can represent Singapore the best."
Whatever the case may be, both promise that the audience won't be let down. "Definitely expect something explosive," said Sezairi.
The Singapore Idol finals will be held on December 27 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium at 8pm. It will be televised live on MediaCorp Channel 5.
