SINGAPORE: Supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice opened its first green outlet at City Square Mall at Kitchener Road on Thursday.

The store offers over 400 biodegradable and environmentally friendly products.

There are also special check-out lanes for customers who bring their own shopping bags.

Moreover, shoppers can deposit cans and plastic bottles into a recycling machine in return for vouchers.

FairPrice said it costs 30 per cent more to set up the eco-friendly supermarket. But it hopes that the move will encourage shoppers to be more environmentally aware.
