SINGAPORE: A former senior police officer has been charged with corruption.

Choo Yew Beng, who was a Deputy Superintendant of Police, allegedly helped arrange for a third party to take the rap for a traffic offence on behalf of an offender.

Choo was handed a sum of S$1,000, which was offered by the offender, to the third party.

If found guilty, Choo faces imprisonment of up to seven years. He could also be fined.

In another case, Chinese national Ma Bao Yu had tried to offer gratification – a dinner meal and bribery – to a project consultant in exchange for leniency during a routine worksite inspection.

The project consultant rejected the offer and reported the matter to his supervisor.

The offence took place in August last year at a HDB construction site in Choa Chu Kang.

If found guilty, Ma could face a maximum penalty of a S$100,000 fine and imprisonment of five years.
