SINGAPORE : The third Singapore Biennale will return in 2011 with a new organiser and a new concept.
Art installations at last year's Singapore Biennale caught the eyes of many local and overseas visitors.
And the 2011 event promises to bring the public closer to the artists, with the theme "Open House". The last two Biennales had curatorial themes of "Belief" and "Wonder".
Artists will be able to create their art at designated sites - one of them being the Old Kallang Airport.
Matthew Ngui, artistic director, Singapore Biennale 2011, said: "When works are made specifically for sites, they begin to peel away layers that a particular space might have.
"So in that way, when our Singaporean public comes in to view the works or experience the works, you find that they begin to learn something more about the space that we live in, and that is really what I am trying to hope to achieve in this Biennale."
The Singapore Art Museum will take over from the National Arts Council to run the two-month long event. It hopes to complement the Singapore Biennale by organising exhibitions on contemporary art.
Tan Boon Hui, director, Singapore Art Museum, said: "With a museum, we run programmes and exhibitions 365 days a year, and so we can take a slightly longer perspective on the Biennale.
"So by 2011, it is not as if suddenly this mega exhibition just landed on our shore - people know what it is, how to look at it, how to approach this type of art."
Organisers are expecting a turnout of 650,000, while the budget stays at S$6 million. And for the first time, admission to the exhibition venues will be free. - CNA/ms
