SINGAPORE: The Tampines Town Council will empower its officers to take action against errant cyclists from next March when the estate allows cycling on footpaths.
But if there're persistent complaints on reckless cycling, the town council will rope in auxilliary police officers.
Under amended by-laws, cyclists in Tampines will be able to ride on footpaths, including covered walkways. However, MP for the area Ong Kian Min said pedestrians will continue to have right of way in any situation.
On concerns about reckless cyclists who do not observe the rules, Mr Ong said enforcement will only be used as a last resort.
He said: "We will engage the Cisco officers, the auxilliary police officers to come only when there is persistent feedback or complaints against reckless cyclists in any particular area.
"First, to educate them and if they continue to do that, perhaps a warning first. Then enforcement summons as the last resort."
Mr Ong said more than 30 town council officers who also have other duties such as estate and property management will help to keep errant cyclists in check.
Under the new by-laws, reckless cyclists could be fined between S$50 and S$1,000. The town council can also charge offenders in court, where they face a fine of up to S$5,000.
According to the town council, three in 10 families in the area are bicycle users. - CNA/vm
