VIENTIANE - Singapore remains on course for a first badminton gold medal at the SEA Games in six years.
On Wednesday, the Republic's women's doubles pair of Sari Shinta Mulia and Yao Lei reached the final after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Thailand's Savitree Amitrapai and Munkit Vacharaporn at the National Sports Complex' Gym Hall 1.
Sari and Yao Lei, the competition's fourth seeds, edged out the Thai's 22-20, 12-21, 21-19 in 70 minutes, and will face top seeds Chin Eee Hui and Wong Pei Tty of Malaysia in Thursday's final.
Should they win, it will be a first badminton triumph for Singapore at the biennial SEA Games, since the women's team struck gold at the 2003 Games in Vietnam.
It will also be the Republic's second in 26 years, after Wong Shoon Keat's men's singles gold in 1983.
"They kept their nerve, especially during the critical points towards the end of the match," said national team manager Chew Keet Hou.
"We're optimistic of our chances. They go into the final knowing that they have come this far and have nothing to lose.
"Instead, the pressure is on the Malaysians to deliver because they are the favourites." - TODAY
