SINGAPORE: Singapore's Zhang Guirong won her fourth straight gold medal on Thursday in Laos at the 25th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the women's shot put, with her attempt of 17.12 metres.
The 31-year-old's nearest rival was Thailand's J Krasaeyan, who secured the silver medal with an attempt of 15.77 metres.
Meanwhile in pencak silat, Team Singapore suffered two defeats and was forced to settle for silver medals instead.
In the women's Class B finals, the Republic's Nur Dinniyati was defeated 5-0. She struggled with swollen ankles, which her opponent and current world champion Huynh Thi Thu Hong capitalised on.
Her compatriot Muhammad Shakir also fell to Vietnam's Yu The Hong, 5-0, in the men's Class B finals.
In athletics, Singapore won a surprise silver medal in the men's 4x100-metre relay. Gary Yeo, Mohd Elfie Mustapha, Lee Cheng Wei and Mohd Amiruddin Jamal clocked 39.82 seconds.
They lost the gold medal to Thailand who came in first in 39.34 seconds. Indonesia claimed the bronze medal.
The silver medal is Team Singapore's third medal in track and field, following the two gold medals won by James Wong and Zhang Guirong.
For badminton, Singapore's women's doubles took on Malaysia on Thursday in the finals, but Shinta M. Sari and Yao Lei could not deal with the agility of their Malaysian opponents.
The first set was hardly a contest, with Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Ty taking it 21-12. The second set was even worse for Singapore, who eventually lost the match 21-11.
This meant that Singapore ended their SEA Games campaign with 33 gold medals.
