SINGAPORE: The Health Promotion Board (HPB) is urging Malay smokers to celebrate the start of the Islamic New Year by stubbing out in a 4-week programme.

The Muharram Challenge, now into its sixth year, aims to equip smokers with quit-smoking skills, along with the support of families and friends.

Participants and families attend workshops and learn tips on practical and emotional support for the smoker.

An outdoor team-building activity will be conducted on December 27 for participants to build rapport with one another while strengthening the family bond.

And for the first time, participants will be provided with new quit options such as phone counselling and an SMS programme.

Registration is open till December 26 and winners will be announced on January 17. To register, participants can go to the website at www.hpb.gov.sg/buangrokok.

The Muharram Challenge was launched by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Manpower Hawazi Daipi on Sunday.

According to the 2007 National Health Survey, there was a slight increase in the number of Singaporeans aged 18 to 69 years who smoked as compared to the previous survey.

It was most common among Malays, with a prevalence rate of 23.2 per cent.
