SINGAPORE: Acting Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said the Malay community and the government can do more together to improve the performance of Malay students.

Mr Teo was at the 44th Annual PMBM, Prophet Muhammad's Birthday Memorial Scholarship Fund Board's bursary presentation ceremony, where he presented scholarship awards to 375 tertiary students.

He was asked to comment on the Education Ministry's report on the ethnic performance of students at national examinations. The statistics showed an improvement by Malay students, but they continued to lag behind the national average.

The minister stressed that the education system here is a good one which allows many to obtain varsity education. But he added that the answer may lie in early preparation.

He said: "What we need to do at the base level is that all the students get a good as preparation as they can before they go to school. When they are in Primary and Secondary schools, that the support from their home as well as what the schools are doing are well aligned. I think we can do a bit better in that area." - CNA/vm
