SINGAPORE : The Traffic Police have clamped down on cyclists who flout traffic rules.
Their target is those who ride on footways, because accidents with pedestrians can result in serious injuries.
More than 600 summons were issued to cyclists for riding illegally on the footways in the first nine months of this year. That was up from just 115 for the whole of last year.
Cyclists who are caught face a fine of S$20.
But if the case results in a court conviction, first-time offenders face a fine of up to S$1,000 or up to three months in jail.
For subsequent offenders, this rises to a S$2,000 fine or up to six months in jail.
Riding on footways is currently only legal in Tampines. - CNA/ms
