SINGAPORE: Some 1,000 underprivileged children from Indonesia will get a little Christmas cheer thanks to a fund-raising drive by the Singapore International Foundation, retail store Metro and Pioneer Junior College.

The three-week-long initiative came to a close on Wednesday with some S$83,000 collected.

Apart from cash donations, about 3,000 of these reusable cloth bags were sold with proceeds going toward the fund.

The money will be used to build a new community hall for a high school in Bandung, Indonesia and financial help for needy students.

Organisers said 30 per cent of the student population at the high school come from disadvantaged backgrounds. - CNA/vm
