SINGAPORE: Five motorists were arrested for drink-driving in a six-hour islandwide police operation that ended at 4am Friday. All are men aged between 28 and 50 years.

Officers had set up simultaneous road blocks at places including Upper Thomson Road, Kallang Road, Jurong West Avenue 2 and Sengkang East Drive to target revellers heading home after the New Year celebrations.

Fifty-six motorists were given the breathalyser test. Five failed the test. It seems the anti drink-driving message is working this time, as the number caught is one of the fewest in a major operation.

Besides the drunk drivers, the officers also issued summonses to 44 other motorists for offences such as speeding and failure to belt up while on the road.

If convicted of drink-driving, first-time offenders could be jailed a maximum of six months or fined up to S$5,000.
