SINGAPORE: The New Year has just begun, and so has the clean-up work at party spots.

Some 20,000 wishing spheres were remnants of the countdown party at Marina Bay on Thursday night. The polyvinyl chloride balls will be turned into three tonnes of raw material, which will then be shipped to India and China for recycling into footwear.

Recyclers said that there are no local companies who can process plastic, so it has to be done offshore.

So far, 3,000 of the spheres have been recovered and the entire cleanup will take an estimated four to seven days.
