SINGAPORE: A humanist who preached clear messages of tolerance, regardless of their religious beliefs or ethnicity was how Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo described the late former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid popularly known as Gus Dur.

Mr Yeo was at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore to pay his last respects and condolences to the family of the late leader and the people and government of Indonesia.

Mr Yeo said the two had known each other a long time, and that his passing was a great loss.

He said: "We knew each other before he entered politics, when he was the head of Nahdlatul Ulama and he gave me wonderful insights into Indonesian politics. We continued to meet when he was President and the last time we met was after he had stepped down in my office. It is a great loss." - CNA/vm
