SINGAPORE : Singaporeans can now see a piece of Cold War history. A part of the Berlin Wall is on display at the Bedok Reservoir Park.
It used to divide people, but it is now a symbol for celebrating diversity.
The Berlin Wall, on display at the Bedok Reservoir Park, is in Singapore due to rather fortunate circumstances.
Robert Hefner, donor of the Berlin Wall, said: "We were trying to find a new place in the United States, and we were listening to people talk about the problems of displaying it.
"And my wife Mei Li, who is a native Singaporean, said: 'Well, what about my country?' And we discussed that with our great friend (Foreign Affairs) Minister George Yeo and he was excited about it. And so one thing led to another from then, and it happened, and here it is."
The graffiti that one sees on the Wall is not the result of vandalism but is actually the work of a German artist who sought to capture the mood of a divided Germany under capitalism and communism, during the Cold War.
The wall was unveiled by Mr Yeo. He said: "The symbolism of that Wall is profound and we hope that the visitors will come here, will see it as an icon for reflection about history, about the human condition, about how we treat fellow human beings."
The final concept for the Berlin Wall installation will include a bistro to be opened later. - CNA/ms
