SINGAPORE: The ongoing Singapore Fringe Festival has brought in artworks and performances that revolve around the theme of art and the law, among them is an installation by Myanmar artist Htein Lin. Htein was an ex-prisoner, so it seemed natural for him to use his experiences as a political prisoner as a basis for his art.
The result is an eerie symbolic piece titled "The Scale of Justice" that draws viewers right into Htein's world.
Each of Htein's works has a poignant story behind it. Each was painted on the prison uniform of a fellow inmate using unorthodox implements like soap bars, syringes, cigarette lighters and bottle caps.
Htein had no choice but to use these instruments to continue his art works during his 7-year prison sentence in Myanmar.
The artist has been based in London for the past few years and continues to incorporate his prison experiences into his art.
"The Scale of Justice", which symbolises how the people of Myanmar are reaching out for justice, will be at the Esplanade Jendela (Visual Arts Space) until January 24.
