SINGAPORE: Singapore is now poised to become a place where every facet of the arbitration process is taken care of to the satisfaction of users, with the opening of the new Maxwell Chambers.
Senior Minister S Jayakumar, who has been associated with the project since 2002 when he was Law Minister, said the facility is especially important for big international cases.
Proper hearing room facilities go a long way for long cases involving a greater number of parties.
But Mr Jayakumar stressed that excellent physical facilities and infrastructure alone will not ensure success in making Singapore an international arbitration hub.
It also depends on many other factors which Singapore already has to its advantage, but which the Republic must continue to nurture and not take for granted.
These include a robust legal system and effective arbitration infrastructure and a judiciary that is understanding and supportive of arbitration.
In addition, a strong pool of lawyers who are skilled in arbitration work as well as international arbitrators of international repute.
Maxwell Chambers also houses many international arbitration institutions from around the world. - CNA/vm
