SINGAPORE: Over 5,000 athletes and key officials will be rubbing their hands with glee when they arrive in August for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

Each of them will receive a Samsung Omnia Lite (B7300) smartphone, courtesy of Samsung Electronics Co, the official Worldwide Partner and Presenting Partner of the Digital Concierge for the YOG.

Under the sponsorship, Samsung will be providing over 5,000 of its smartphones preloaded with the "Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010" application for all athletes and key team officials to keep in touch with the latest happenings at the YOG to be held in Singapore from August 14-26.

Mr Gregory Lee, president and chief executive officer of Samsung Asia Pte Ltd, believes that the sponsorship will turn out to be an unprecedented success in Singapore’s sporting history.

"We are delighted to offer the Omnia Lite, blending stylish design and cutting edge features for youths from around the world to communicate and connect with one another.

"Through the provision of our handsets for the “Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010", application, we hope to bring timely, accurate and interesting information to the Games," Mr Lee said.

The Digital Concierge is the brainchild of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) and Samsung, in collaboration with SingTel, the official Multimedia Services Partner of the Games.

Upon their arrival in Singapore, athletes and officials will receive their smartphones that will be pre-loaded with the Digital Concierge application. The application consists of 9 content & services functions (Youth Olympic Village, Culture and Education Programme (CEP), Sport Competition, Start Lists & Results, News, Venues, Fun and Promotion, Explore Singapore and Contact Us).

One of the main highlights is the personalized schedule feature. Athletes will receive schedules that are programmed accordingly to their individual disciplines. It enables them to keep track of the competition dates, training hours and resting duration during the Games.

Other features include a one-stop mobile social network that supports popular networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook for the athletes to keep in contact with their loved ones at home. A tourism information guide by the Singapore Tourism Board is also featured, displaying popular eateries and shopping spots in Singapore.

Digital Concierge is designed exclusively for the Singapore 2010 YOG and the application is not available for download at Samsung's online application stores. According to Samsung, athletes and officials can download other applications from the online stores to add on to the existing application.

On a downside, key content on the Digital Concierge will only be available in English and French. This is in accordance with the Olympic tradition. To counter that, developers will be including a multi-lingual dictionary that enables real-time translation in seven major languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish).

If that is not sufficient, a 24-hour direct click-to-call feature is available in eleven languages to assist those who do not speak the aforementioned languages.

The smartphones will also come together with a local SIM card that will be registered to each user. According to SingTel, the SIM card will include 300 minutes of local outgoing calls, free incoming calls and a 30GB date bundle for accessing the Digital Concierge software. Roaming charges are billed separately.

Another piece of good news for the athletes and officials is that the Samsung smartphones will be theirs to keep even after the Games is over. - CNA/fa
