SINGAPORE: This year, Valentine's Day and the first day of the Lunar New Year fall on the same day - February 14. But gift retailers said this may not necessarily translate into a windfall for them.

Noel Gifts is one of the biggest players in the gift hamper business. But its management said the clash may put a strain on customer's resources.

Already, it has seen a 10 per cent drop in business for Valentine's Day flowers and gifts.

And instead of the traditional pre-Valentine's rush, it expects business for this segment to go down even further to about half of last year's figures by February 14.

It is better news for other retailers though.

For example, some chefs experimented with different cooking materials for almost a year to come up with tiger claw cookies.

And with the coming year being the Year of the Tiger, they hope to do roaring good business despite pricing each bottle at S$2 more than the average market rate. - CNA/vm
