SINGAPORE: The National University Cancer Institute, Singapore, has been officially launched, three years after the government announced the need for a second such centre here.
The number of new cancer cases has been rising steadily - from some 7,000 in 1997 to 9,000 in 2007. It is estimated that this figure will grow to 13,000 in 2015.
To find new ways to tackle the growing problem, the institute is also focusing on research to develop better treatments.
More than S$92,000 was raised for its Endowment Fund during the launch on Tuesday evening.
Among the items auctioned was a putter, donated by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, which raised S$18,000.
The Endowment Fund provides assistance to needy patients, research, as well as training healthcare professionals.
