SINGAPORE : The 2010 Winter Olympics got off to spectacular start with the opening ceremony in Vancouver on Saturday morning.
But a group of Canadians celebrated the occasion thousands of miles away in sunny Singapore.
Appropriately, the festivities in Singapore got off to a roaring start with the familiar lion dance.
Breakfast was provided for the 500 members of the Canadian community gathered at Fairmont Hotel.
They were also joined by Singaporean friends.
And the crowd was not disappointed with what they saw, as the hosts spent seven years planning the 2010 edition.
Canada is hoping to do well at the Games, which the country is hosting for the second time, after Calgary in 1988.
Canada also played host to the Summer Games, when Montreal staged the event in 1976.
On Friday, the Singapore Sports Council said it is in the initial stages of looking at supporting athletes to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
David Sevigny, Canadian High Commissioner to Singapore, said: "For us it is very important because this is really a twin Olympic year. This is an Olympic year both for Canada and for Singapore and again, we are looking forward very much in using this as a springboard for the Youth Olympic Games." - CNA/ms
