SINGAPORE: Bicultural studies is not just for the elite, as proven by Tampines Primary School. This year, it became the first neighbourhood elementary school to offer a bicultural programme.
24 primary three students have been selected as the pioneer batch.
They get to learn about all things Chinese - from martial arts, calligraphy, to translating between Mandarin and English.
And there's more in store when they reach the fifth grade such as immersion trips to China.
Tampines Primary said it will implement the programme step by step, according to the ability of its students.
It has also prepared a textbook to infuse Confucianism into its curriculum.
Kang Wei Ming, Department Head, Mother Tongue, Tampines Primary School, said: "Basically this book is a supplementary reading to the civics and moral education book that MOE has. It basically focuses on teaching Confucian values to the pupils." - CNA/vm
