SINGAPORE: A Singaporean who was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for planning and preparing to engage in militant activities, was released on a Suspension Direction (SD) on February 21.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the self-radicalised Singaporean, Abdul Basheer Abdul Kader, was arrested and detained under the ISA in 2007.
The ministry said Abdul Basheer was influenced by the extremist propaganda he read on the Internet.
It added that he had developed the mindset that he had to wage 'militant jihad' in a land where Muslims were "under attack".
At the time of his arrest, he had made specific plans to pursue 'militant jihad' in Afghanistan. However, he was arrested before he could embark on his violent agenda.
Since his detention, the ministry said Abdul Basheer has been cooperative in investigations and shown significant progress in his rehabilitation.
As such, he was assessed to no longer pose a security threat that required preventive detention. - CNA/vm
