SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kang Seng said it's too early to review the marriage and parenthood package at this stage.
The enhanced packages was announced in August 2008 and implemented shortly after.
Mr Wong said resident births fell by 351, from 37,277 in 2008 to 36,926 last year.
One reason for the decline he said could be due to the recession.
Mr Wong, who also chairs the National Population Committee, said the government would let the 2008 marriage and parenthood package run for a while before doing a comprehensive review.
In the meantime, he hopes that Singaporeans will not be deterred by the Year of the Tiger and proceed to get married and start a family when they are ready to do so.
He added that children born in the Year of the Tiger are no different from children born under other zodiac signs.
Mr Wong was giving a written reply to NMP Associate Professor Paulin Straughan who had asked if the government intends to enhance pro-family incentives in light of the lower births recorded last year. 938LIVE/vm
