SINGAPORE: Firefighters took hours to battle a vegetation fire in Tampines that was fuelled by the hot and dry spell.

The fire at Tampines Service Road started at about noon, and smoke covered the area for several hours.

The SCDF said some 50 firefighters were still at the scene as of 8pm Tuesday.

It said the dry spell has seen outbreaks of grass, lallang and vegetation fires.

It has responded to about 200 cases of such fires since the start of the year.

The SCDF expects more such fires if the dry conditions and hot weather continue.
